Soon after the firing on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, in 1861, Massachusetts heeded President Abraham Lincoln's call for troops to put down the rebellion. Throughout the war, the state produced over sixty infantry regiments for the Union cause: five cavalry regiments, and nearly two dozen light and heavy artillery batteries, regiments, and battalions. Massachusetts also raised the two most famous African-American regiments-the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Infantry. Future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes fought in the gallant "Harvard Regiment", also known as the 20th Massachusetts Infantry. By war's end, the Bay State had sacrificed 6,000 of its sons in battle and another 8,000 to disease, accounting for 14% of the Union's total losses. Massachusetts regiments fought in all theaters of war, acquitting themselves with honor and glory wherever they met the enemy.
